Vocal Cord Cyst

Cysts are pathological bags in the form of bubbles, typically filled with liquid, colloid (semi-liquid), fat or air, which occur in different tissues and organs of the body and cause many diseases.

They are also called tumors. They do not have a certain size, they can be different sizes. They are surrounded by a membrane-like cyst wall. They can be benign or malignant.

However, in case of the possibility of cancer, all cysts are treated as malignant and analysed and it is decided after examination whether they are benign or not. Even if they are benign, they can cause very serious problems due to the sensitivity of the area where they are located in the body and their size. The vast majority of them are removed by surgical intervention. They are often confused with abscesses, which are covered with pus.

Vocal Cord Cyst is a benign tissue deterioration that is usually formed in the middle part of the vocal cords and is unilateral, filled with fluid or oil, white or yellow, and looks like a sac, and is called a vocal cord cyst. They are not as common as nodules and polyps. There are two different types: Mucus Retention Cysts, which are filled with fluid and mucosa, and Epidermoid / Sebaceous Cysts, which are filled with keratin or oil.

What are the symptoms of vocal cord cyst?

Although the symptoms of vocal cord cyst vary from person to person, it usually manifests itself with hoarseness and bifurcation, vocal fatigue, difficulty in vocalisation and sudden stinging pain in the throat during speech. Reflux disease increases the severity of vocal cord cyst complaints because it is related to the muscles near the larynx.

What Causes Vocal Cord Cyst?

The exact cause of vocal cord cyst formation is not known. It usually occurs due to inflammation or tissue blockage in the area where it is located. As with nodules or polyps, cyst cases caused by excessive and bad use of the voice alone are limited. It usually occurs when the voice is used badly during an upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) or laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx). Conditions that occur during the development of the baby in the womb and are seen with birth have also been encountered. In addition to these factors, genetic problems, sebaceous glands, hormonal irregularities and problems can also lead to the formation of vocal cord cysts.

The diagnosis and diagnosis of vocal cord cysts is usually made by endoscopic devices called laryngoscopy or stroboscopy, in which the vocal cords and their surroundings are imaged, or by acoustic analysis, in which the sound extracted is analysed by computer. In parallel with this examination, a detailed examination of the vocal cords is performed by an ear-nose-throat doctor. Thus, it is understood whether the complaints are caused by a vocal cord cyst.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can cysts form again after vocal cord cyst surgery?

There is a risk of cyst formation again, but surgical intervention and adherence to correct vocal hygiene can reduce this risk.

How is voice quality affected after vocal cord cyst surgery?

After the operation, a positive improvement in voice quality can be seen with the removal of the cyst and the correction of the vocal cords. However, complete recovery may take some time.

What is the recovery process like after vocal cord cyst surgery?

The recovery process after vocal cord cyst surgery is similar to other vocal cord surgeries but may take slightly longer. Absolute voice rest is recommended for 7–10 days after the operation; during this period, you should not speak or whisper at all. Because a vocal cord cyst is located deeper within the vocal fold, the tissue requires a longer healing time. From the second week onward, short and gentle speaking can begin, and normal speech is usually resumed after the third week. Complete voice recovery may take 2–3 months, and receiving voice therapy during this period helps improve the final outcome.

Can a vocal cord cyst be treated with medication or therapy?

A vocal cord cyst does not respond to medication or voice therapy because it is a fluid-filled sac and does not resolve on its own. While vocal cord nodules may shrink with proper voice use, there is no permanent solution for a vocal cord cyst other than surgery. Voice therapy does not eliminate the cyst itself, but it is important for improving voice use before and after surgery. Before vocal cord cyst surgery, some surgeons may recommend a short period of voice rest and anti-reflux treatment, but these measures do not cause the cyst to disappear. If symptoms persist, surgery becomes unavoidable.

How is a vocal cord cyst diagnosed?

The diagnosis of a vocal cord cyst requires videolaryngoscopy or videostroboscopy. In this procedure, a thin camera is passed through the nose or mouth to allow close examination of the vocal cords. Stroboscopy uses a special light source to display the vibration of the vocal cords in slow motion, clearly revealing the exact location of the cyst. Before planning vocal cord cyst surgery, the size, location, and type of the cyst are determined. In some cases, if the cyst is very small or located deep within the vocal fold, a definitive diagnosis may only be made during surgery. Voice analysis tests may also be performed to assess how much the cyst is affecting voice quality.
